From the Soul Experiment, “David Hammons an American Artist who was defined by his political stance and refusal to conform. He created the African American flag in 1990 for the Black USA exhibition at an Amsterdam museum. This flag was inspired by the U.S. flag and the Pan-African flag: her merged the two contrasting symbols to create a conversation about the mixed history and mixed messages behind American history. This flag’s purpose is to deliver a sense of pride and confirms the presence of African Americans in the United States and that being black and American are ONE and the SAME THING.”
